Cesarskie cięcie
W roku 1983 wykonano 809 000 cesarskich cięć (21 procent wszystkich żywych porodów), czyniąc ten zabieg najpospolitszą położniczo-ginekologiczną interwencją chirurgiczną. Drugą w kolejności wśród najpopularniejszych operacji położniczo-ginekologicznych jest wycięcie macicy (histerektomia – 673 000), zaś trzecią diagnostyczne rozszerzanie i łyżeczkowanie macicy (632 000). W roku 1983 operacje położniczo-ginekologiczne stanowiły 23 procent wszystkich operacji wykonywanych w Stanach Zjednoczonych.104
W roku 2001 cięcie cesarskie było wciąż najpospolitszą położniczo-ginekologiczną interwencją chirurgiczną. Rocznie rodzi się około 4 milionów dzieci, z których 24 procent poprzez cesarskie cięcie, co daje 960 000 operacji. W Holandii jedynie 8 procent porodów odbywa się poprzez cesarskie cięcie. Zakładając, że ludzkie dzieci są identyczne w Stanach Zjednoczonych i Holandii, wykonujemy w Stanach 640 000 niepotrzebnych cesarskich cięć przy ich trzy albo i cztery razy większej śmiertelności i znacznie większej zachorowalności niż w przypadku porodu drogami naturalnymi.105
Współczynnik cięć cesarskich w Stanach Zjednoczonych w roku 1965 wynosił tylko 4,5 procent. W roku 1986 wzrósł do 24,1 procent. Autor stwierdza, że oczywiście „doszło do nie kontrolowanej pandemii medycznie nieuzasadnionych cesarskich cięć”.106 VanHam donosi, że w 7 procentach przypadków cesarskich cięć dochodzi do krwotoków poporodowych, w 3,5 procenta do tworzenia się krwiaków oraz w 3,5 procenta do infekcji, zaś współczynnik łącznej pooperacyjnej zachorowalności wynosi 35,7 procent.107
